I watch Frankie disappear inside the study hall, and after a moment, I follow. For one thing, I want to hear more about the Skeleton Crew. For another, she’s right about skipping study hall—I don’t know the rules well enough to break them just yet.
I shadow her to a long wooden table at the far end of the room and take the seat across from hers. She pulls a book out of her bag and I do the same. After a few minutes of pretending to read, I look at her and say, “What exactly is the Skeleton Crew?”
She frowns. Her gaze darts furtively as she whispers out of the side of her mouth, “Not here, not now. There are eyes and ears everywhere.” Then she makes a point of ignoring me while I look around, trying to determine just what she might mean by that.
In Quiver Hollows, the library was purposely made to look as old and grand as the books displayed on its shelves. One of my favorite things is to spend an entire day poring over the magical volumes with illustrations that come to life with every flip of a page, where the characters can actually speak for themselves. And also where, if you’re really into a particular story, you can carry your book into a designated room that allows you to immerse yourself in that world. Or even create a completely different ending for a story if you’re not happy with the one the author gave you.
Needless to say, the Moonsliver Academy library/study hall is nothing like that.
Where Quiver Hollows is a colorful, vibrant, lively, imaginative place, this building is dull and bleak, consisting of varying shades of brown brick and gray concrete, its shelves filled with bloated, boring old tomes, their dull, dehydrated pages offering the sort of stories you never wanted to know.
Everyone around me seems to be studying dutifully, or at least putting on a good show of it, including Frankie. She scribbles furiously with her pencil, filling an entire page of her notebook.
I lean toward her, wondering what she could possibly find so fascinating that she sees fit to take notes, when I discover she’s not taking notes at all. She’s writing a note meant for me.

While nobody really knows what they do, it’s widely believed that they’re dangerous and scary and that it’s best to stay out of their business in the hopes that they’ll stay out of yours.
